Pirates turn to department of youth

19 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
PORT Panthers Pirates’ department of youth could pay big dividends for the Hastings River District Cricket Association club this weekend.

As the 2009-10 season reaches its climax, the Pirates will head into the grand finals with two chances of success.

The firsts tackle minor premiers Camden Haven tomorrow and Sunday in The Westport Club decider at Oxley Oval, Port Macquarie, while Port Panthers Pirates Blue faces Comboyne in a third grade one-day battle at Inmon Field, Laurieton.

A major factor in the senior team’s charge has been the form of young guns such as Adi Gulati, Ryan McMahon, Ben Woodward and Jordan Cook.

“It’s been a bit of a rebuilding period for us,” skipper Paul Stait admitted.

“So, we’ve had opportunities for the juniors to shine, especially those handy with the bat.

“Adi’s proven to be very competent, amassing 167 runs at 23.90.

“Ryan has played five matches with the top side, and is averaging 32.50.

“Ben’s a talented all-rounder while Jordan opened the innings at the start of the season.

“And, none of them have let us down when called upon.

“At first, our aim was to make the semis.

“So, to take on Camden Haven in the grand final is a massive result – and it’s a bonus.

“But, we believe we can win it now.”

The Havens finished at the head of the points table, with 60.6 – 10.4 in front of the Pirates, who snuck into third spot.

However, the “underdogs” eliminated Macquarie Hotel less than seven days ago to book the remaining grand final berth.

“We’ve had some close, heated battles with the Havens,” Stait said.

“The boys are very keen to show we deserve to be in the premiership mix.

“We’ll need to watch the Kerr brothers, Nathan and Sam, Brad Aldous and James King, who belted 173 against us earlier in the season.

“I think our bowlers have definitely improved since that last meeting.

“Glenn Kemp’s picked up 26 wickets at a cost of 13.80, Ken Bennett is averaging 19.70 after removing 22 batsmen, Shane Williams has an average of 28.10 and Steve Lacey’s chipped in with 10 scalps.

“In 2009-10, anyone can beat anyone on their day.

“It might just be our turn this weekend.”

The Port News contacted the Camden Haven Cricket Club, but received no assistance in promoting the grand final.
