Camden Haven triumphs

22 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
CAMDEN Haven erased the disappointment of last season’s decider to capture the 2009-10 Hastings River District Cricket Association crown yesterday.

In 2008-09, the Havens were unable to bowl a delivery as rain washed out the grand final, handing victory immediately to minor premiers Wauchope RSL.

But, on the weekend, luck favoured the competition heavyweights as they upstaged the Port Panthers Pirates at Oxley Oval.

And, it went down to the wire.

The Havens, after winning the toss, opted to bat.

While Chris Yewdall (43) and James King (40) performed strongly, the Pirates’ bowlers did well to restrict the side to 183.

Andrew Hall (20) and Alan Williams (20) also contributed to the total.

Shane Williams toiled well to pick up 4-56 from 12.4 overs.

Glenn Kemp maintained his recent good form, collecting 3-48, and Ken Bennett snared 2-50.

In reply, the Pirates began confidently despite the early loss of Paul Stait (8).

Ryan McMahon (38), Leon Clogg (26), Steve Ware and Bennett then guided the team to 3-94 at stumps.

Yesterday, Brad Aldous struck almost instantly, removing Bennett (5) on his overnight score.

Rob McColl (9) was next to fall – leaving the Pirates precariously placed at 5-136.

Disaster hit the underdogs when Ware (41), Adi Gulati (13) and Garth Mangan (0) were dismissed within a run of each other.

All of a sudden, the Pirates slipped to 8-156.

Williams (16), Ben Woodward (5 not out) and Kemp (4) did their best to rectify the situation, however, Todd Dalton trapped Kemp leg before wicket with the total on 181 – three short of victory.

Dalton finished with 4-20 and Aldous claimed 3-36.

Nothing mentioned about the very dubious decisions that gifted Camden Haven the win.

Best team won. Bad calls are part and parcel of the game. Bad sportsmanship has no place in cricket.

Don't worry Pirate man, you got into the grand final thanks to a toss win and a pitch that should never of been played on last Saturday against Macquarie Hotel.

I thought an lbw was to hit the pad first, not the bat? Fancy that. Two runs to go in a tremendous finals series before I was set straight. Well done to all the players.

You are kidding, "good sport". No Camden Haven supporter should comment on sportsmanship. Bad calls are part and parcel. It does not change the fact that it was an unfortunate way to determine the first grade premiership

Umpires have a very hard job to do,they may make mistakes, such is cricket. Blaming them for a loss is poor form, there were 11 batsmen who had the chance to score runs. Suck it up congratulate the winners and forget blame. See you next year Frustrated

As a cricket watcher from way back and visiting from Sydney, I have rarely seen such a poor display of poor sportsmanship as displayed by the last batsman out on Sunday. I happened to be in a perfect position behind the bowlers arm for that final ball and it clearly hit the pad first. It was a brave decision and should be recognised as such. The batsman displayed his displeasure all the way from the field to the club members and family on the hill ,who then turned on the umpire who gave the decision like a mob of ferals. Disapointment is one thing, poor sportsmanship is another. It looked like a thrilling Grand Final, and like all close encounters there is a sense of tension. But please, for the games sake, consider the fact it is great game, not to be demeaned like it was on Sunday. I watched much of the game and the standard of play, and, yes, even the quality of umpiring, was of the highest standard. I was very impressed. To the trained eye it would have passed as a grade fixture in Sydney, and the umpiring from the 2 umpires was as good as I see on my rounds around the grade cricket venues. Please do not allow people like that batsman to influence the sport in your fine town

I could not believe the last batsman's behaviour on Sunday. Do you have a judiciary here? If he behaved like that after getting out where I play he would be getting a month of watching his mates play while he 'cools off' at the demand of the judiciary. What a bad sport. Cricket does not need him!

Come on guys (or girls) if you are going to post negative comments at least have the intestinal fortitude to put your name on it. And as for the individual who felt the need to send an anonymous email I would get your facts straight before making slanderous comments and once again have the intestinal fortitude to own up to what you have written. In the 10 + years I have been involved with the cricket our guys have received far worse than what they dish out. I am and will remain a proud Camden Haven supporter. Jealousy is a terrible thing don't let it ruin the game.

As a female playing in a predominately male sport I am in no way shocked at the events that took place on Sunday. The sorts of language and poor sportsmanship displayed were in no way different to many of the games I have played in. Yes, perhaps there is no place for this in the "gentlemens" game but we all are perfectly well aware that shit happens. Perhaps it cannot always been seen or heard by the spectators but this is present in almost every sport. Come monday morning it's season over and Camden haven have taken the title...there is always next season. Unfortunately someone always has to win and someone to lose. Life goes on. Instead of having a go at each other we should all move on and wait in anticipation for next season to begin.
