Bennett's win historic women's match

17 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
SANDIE Bennett Sports Therapy grabbed a psychological advantage, as well as a slice of history, in the Hastings River District Women’s Cricket Association limited overs match at Oxley Oval, Port Macquarie, on Sunday.

In the first female showdown on a turf wicket in 19 years, Bennett’s won a thriller over the side they will meet again in Friday night’s 15/15 grand final.

Before folding, the Lismore Women’s Cricket Association hosted the last fixture in NSW Country during the 1990-91 season.

Ironically, players from the 15/15 competition made themselves available for Sunday’s 35-over encounter.

Constable Printing boasted the services of captain Kate Jackson, Lauren Dickinson, Megan Velardi, Ursula Schwarz, Jackie Kennedy, Gabe Easey, Claire Coelho, Jo Borger, Liza Watts and Jacqui Isbel.

Sandie Bennett’s Sports Therapy featured the likes of skipper Mel Antram, Kim Broderick, Mel Norup, Aimee Yewdall, Maree Fens, Charlie Inskip, Erin Clarke, Susan Oxley, Sandie Bennett, Lea Smith and Kira McGoldrick.

Bennett’s won the toss and elected to bat.

However, the outfit got off to a disastrous start when Jackson cleaned up Antram on the fifth ball of the innings.

Bennett’s then slumped to 3-9, after four overs, with Jackson and Easey proving difficult to get away.

The team slowly recovered its position with Norup holding up an end.

Inskip made a quick fire 25 and, with Norup’s unbeaten 63, Bennett’s reached 7-130.

Jackson (1-23), Easey (3-17) and Watts (0-6) bowled well for the opposition.

Constable’s, needing 131 to win, started in the same fashion as Bennett’s with a fifth ball wicket to Yewdall.

A great run out by Oxley, fielding at point, saw the side slip to 2-2.

Opener Dickinson steadied the ship with 15.

But, wickets fell at regular intervals with Easey (17), Jackson (15) and Coelho (20) all falling in the pursuit of quick runs.

Constable’s campaign ended in the 35th over, via a run out to Antram.

Her direct hit left the team 11 short of victory.

The Hastings River District Women’s Cricket Association committee would like to congratulate all players on a fantastic day and thanked its sponsors (The Westport Club, Constable Printing, Sandie Bennett’s Sports Therapy, Tickner’s Golf Factory and Enduro Sports) for their support throughout 2009-10.

The season will conclude this Friday with the 15/15 decider from 5.45pm at Wayne Richards Park.

Bennett’s, who eliminated defending premiers Tickner’s Golf Factory last week, tackles Constable’s in the grand final.

A barbecue will be in operation, with sausage sandwiches, and drinks available to purchase.
