Basketball Slam starts

THE Northern All Stars have found the going tough on the opening days of the 2010 Powerade Pacific Coast Slam at the Port Macquarie Indoor Sports Stadium.

Teams from NSW Country, NSW Metropolitan, Victoria Country, South Australia, Queensland, New Zealand and the North Coast have converged on the Hastings for the six-day tournament.

The All Stars, containing players from Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Tamworth, Quirindi and Lismore, have registered just one win and seven losses in the under 15 and under 17 men’s and women’s divisions.

The North Coast representative outfit upstaged Queensland Southern Districts 67-64 in the under 17 women’s encounter on Saturday after trailing 35-20 at half-time.

Twenty-four hours earlier, the NSW Kookaburras knocked over the All Stars 54-33.

In the under 15 women’s section, the NSW Harboursiders and Kookaburras upstaged the hosts 58-41 and 55-21 respectively.

The Harboursiders and Kookaburras also dominated the All Stars in the under 15 men’s category.

The Harboursiders started their campaign with an 87-49 victory while the Kookaburras triumphed 92-35.

The All Stars fell victim to the Kookaburras 90-29 in the under 17 men’s division on Friday, and Queensland Southern Districts 75-42 on day two.

Games continue today and tomorrow, with the grand finals scheduled for Wednesday.
