‘We don’t want burgers sold from our backyard’

‘We don’t want burgers sold from our backyard’

10 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
THE community is as opposed as ever to a proposed fast-food restaurant near schools and homes, a paediatrician says.

Dr David McDonald predicts community backlash against an amended proposal to build a McDonald’s restaurant on the corner of Greenmeadows and Ocean drives.

McDonald’s has asked Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to review the refusal of its proposal.

It lodged amended plans in support of the proposal.

The council’s Development Assessment Panel rejected the development application last year on traffic and safety grounds.

Dr McDonald said the proposal was simply inappropriate on the neighbourhood centre site.

“There will be a strong, concerted community response to this ... there is no question about it,” he said.

“For us, no the first time meant no.”

Dr McDonald said the situation was an assault on sensible planning laws.

The Port Macquarie paediatrician also is opposed to the restaurant’s location close to schools when there is an obesity epidemic.

He said the rules would eventually have to change, even though there was no mechanism for children’s health to be considered in the decision-making process.

When the development application was rejected last year, the panel’s independent chair, Paul Drake said the site was residentially zoned and that had priority, particularly in this area.

McDonald’s says it addressed the council’s concerns in its amendments.

A McDonald’s spokeswoman stressed owner-operators Brett and Jacqui Jones’ community contribution.

During the past 15 months, she said, they had contributed more than $60,000 to clubs, recreational and community groups and schools.

“They employ more than 350 people in Port Macquarie and inject about $750,000 a year in wages back into the community,” the spokeswoman said.

Concerned parents from Cairncross Pl said they valued the contributions McDonald’s made to the community and wholeheartedly supported any commercial business owner operating within a business zone.

“We do not approve of a large-scale commercial fast-food outlet like McDonald’s, the nation’s largest, selling burgers from our backyard,” they said.

They said the fear, stress and impact on the financial, physical, emotional and mental health of their children and families would be detrimental and drastically decrease their quality of life.

Question: Are they simply putting the money back into the community being the difference between cheap under 17 year old labour and that of an Adult? Answer: Probably. Last time I checked there was hardly any Adults working at MD's or the ratio was very low. Maybe the payments are guilt driven, isn't fat a big part of heart attacks? What does that cost the community? Just watch Super Size me for the reality surrounding McDonalds.... Don't worry they have their Corporate Lawyers so it will get done sooner or later. I would suggest to the nearby owners, face reality, sell your house for a nice price now while you can. You really are wasting your time. Their pockets are far deeper than yours! When you look at what it costs to set up a Store/ Franchise, it is close to, if not more than $1M, so of course they want some sort of return. Just check out what they did at Victoria Rd, Drummoyne. Wake up people amd smell the roses IT WILL HAPPEN!!! And yes, people will go there eventually. It willsave them have to travel into town, great for the environment, car fumes replaced by the greasy smell of burgers... Children arat a young age, thats why they have the slides and funpark etc..

Like I said 'sorry old glasshouse brigade will start up again' Put your efforts into changing the food habits of your local school canteens and don't buy your kids electronic games like playstation and Wii etc. Keep your kids active. Don't forget about the schools that have been close to the maccas near settlement city for years. Why weren't the Glass House brigade banging on then? Be honest with your comments don't preach about obesity in these columns. You simply don't want maccas there because it will effect your house values!

Well coming from an employee of mcdonalds, the proposed site isnt a bad idea. They are working with everyone to try and make it happen, have changed and altered there plans to suit you but most still disagree. Mcdonalds in bay street was next to 2 schools for 20+years and its really quite simple if you dont want your kids eating it, dont give them the money. Maccas isnt just about brett and jacqui wanting money, they put alot back into the community and spend alot on upgrading restraunts and making it a place that you can enjoy.

Reminds me of the harrassment techniques that the Bush Fire Brigade participate in when they accost drivers trying to leave the service station near the 'doughnut' on their 'fund raising' days.

If it was purely a residential area before people moved to the area people would have every right to complain. But the proposed area in question is a retail site. Short memories of quite a few dont seem remember the previous business that operated from there would have been just as noisy with the cars filling up petrol at all hours and selling junk food.Is there really any difference because its a maccas going in??

What do you mean 'Alex', it is not simple to stop asking people to sign a petition, or do you have a problem when you drive past a Macca's you have to stop in? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion with out some woman standing in a shopping centre asking everyone who passes her to sign the petition, we can see the writing on the cardboard on the cardtable, if people wanted to sign they would stop.

And stop asking people to sign your petition at Emerald Downs Plaza, if they want to sign it they will, gee I hate that. And NO I did not sign it, it is as simple as AW123 said, 'If you don't want it, DON'T EAT IT'

There are enough "fast food"outlets in Port already... I for one do not want another !. I do not want to hear the the rumbles of a "souped up" engine whilst it idles in the drivethrough, I do not want to listen to jeers & cat calls of the late night visitors in the car park....I simply do not want it there at all.......Are the Jones going to supply Security Guards to patrol the area as they do at the Bay St Macca's.They do this to promote the safe & good conduct of the area...Do they really, honestly think that "the area will be not be impacted by late night car park hoons & not to mention the many parents who will sit outside at closing time with thier cars idling waiting somewhat patiently for thier child to finish cleaning up".....Do the Jones live in the Green Meadows area ?. (Or do they sit up high on the hill , or overlook the water)..... Would they like it if I sat in my car whilst it idles, outside thier house, with me coming & going approximatley every 2 mins at Dinner time, sitting there smelling the fumes...!!! Would they like to live next door ? ..Me thinks not.. I think the main thing to remember that this is a residential area, not the 'Eat Street' area.

geeesuz. im not exactly excited about another maccas but really. if you don't want it DON'T EAT IT. it's not like they are force feeding you. give your kids a packed lunch rather than lunch money, and the option isn't there..
