A WORRIED resident living on Port Macquarie’s main northern arterial road has been told he will have to sue council if he wants it improved.
This is despite four serious, multi-car pile-ups since August.
Barry and Dorothy Twible moved to Hastings River Dr two years ago and have “lost count” of the accidents in that time.
They say the poor condition of the road, the lack of speed enforcement from a 100km/h zone into a 60km/h zone, lack of footpaths, and the narrowness of the road contributed to the accidents.
Mr Twible has had enough and has called a meeting of concerned residents at his property today.
“We are so disappointed with council’s attitude,” he said.
“All we’re trying to do is get the speed limit dropped, and the road repaired, and make it safer for pedestrians.”
He said the aggression and abuse shown by drivers to residents living in Hastings River Dr as they tried to enter their properties was not acceptable.
“We are tailgated, abused, horns are blown and we have bottles thrown at us,” he said.
If that’s not bad enough, trucks, especially B-doubles, can barely fit on the road and, each time they pass, houses vibrate.
“One of our neighbours had to replace two TVs and another neighbour’s cabinet glass doors have to be taped because everything vibrates,” Mr Twible said.
The worst time to travel on the road was during peak hours about 8am and 3.30pm.
There are fears for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists who use Hastings River Dr, particularly school children who walk along the road to get to the bus stop.
“My heart is in my mouth whenever I see a pedestrian pass,” Mr Twible said.
He was told by a Port Macquarie-Hastings Council employee last week that council had no intention of repairing the road because it was too expensive. Nor were there plans to make it safer for pedestrians.
“I was told if we wish to do anything about it, we will have to litigate council,” Mr Twible said. “As a very concerned resident, I feel another major accident is possible.”
A letter from council to Mr Twible said the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority was responsible for determining the speed limits on all public roads.
