Unions vow to greet Premier

25 Jul, 2011 07:38 AM
UNIONS members will make their voices heard in Port Macquarie today when Premier Barry O'Farrell brings his cabinet to town.

Nurses, firefighters, teachers and other public sector workers will rally outside Port Macquarie Panthers to voice their anger at the NSW government’s plan to cut arbitration rights and fix pay increases for public sector employees.

The rally is planned for 11am, immediately before NSW government community cabinet meets at the venue.

Unions NSW Secretary Mark Lennon said the rally would ask NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell to explain his unfair attack on their rights.

“These unfair laws trample all over workplace rights, leaving nurses, firefighters and others with the worst workplace laws,” Unions NSW Secretary Mark Lennon said.

The rally will ask Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams and others to explain why they did not announce the wages plan before the state election in March.

Meanwhile the Premier nd his cabinet will take questions from the floor at the community cabinet public forum at Panthers from noon until 1.30pm.

It is expecet clean energy campaigners, flood-affected residents and coal seam gas objectors will make their presence known.

Our reporters Kate Prideaux and Brie Snare will be tweeting throughout the day, follow them here ...

Great to see the real questions put to the premier on twitter and not moderated in the Nationals interests by the press.

After running rampant during the labor state govt years and putting the nsw budget in serious deficit, the unions have some nerve to make demands of the new govt which is still cleaning up the labor mess. Maybe they can persuade people like oakshott who has made it clea that he does not care about his electorate,, but the new state govt will not beheld hostage

The unions are nothing but a gang. Grow up and realize that times have changed. Barry O'Farrell has not even been NSW premier for 5 months and the union is already trying to chop him off at the legs. Any educated person knows Labor and the Union are hand in hand. Step back take a breath and see it for what it really is.

Gregh when you do the same level of training and have the amount of experience in vital community positions that the majority of public servants have and you are told that your being down graded? Do you go to your boss as an individual ( one of thousands) and say you don't like what is being done when you negotiated an employment agreement in good faith or do you join a union and put your collective voice forward. The public service is a huge organisation negotiating as not part of a union is laughable!

To Gregh: The previous state Labor government reduced state debt $10bn throughout its time in office. While, the Nationals have a clear mandate to govern this state, they do not have a mandate to rewrite history.

The main cause for concern about the new government's industrial relations policy is that they have taken the the role of arbitrating wages and conditions disputes, from the independent umpire (the Industrial Relations Commission). It is disturbing that no mandate was sought by the Nationals regarding these changes.

It was embarrassing seeing "rent a crowd" heckling our elected premier yesterday. After the mess the labour government left they should hang their heads in shame and show some respect for our elected premier.

Does that include unions like the AMA, Christian & religious groups and the farmers unions?

Unions are a lobby group like any other. Lobbying became a growth industry in the Howard years. What's the difference?
