Show Santa the way to Port

HERE’S your chance to switch on to Christmas – not just in our town centre but across the length and breadth of our suburban streets.

The Port News, along with Country Energy, is once again spreading festive cheer through its annual Christmas lights competition.

The Port News’ group sales manager, Cathie Linklater, said residents lit up the town with “dramatic and fantastic” displays for all to see and entered them in the spectacular.

She said competition for the best light display was fierce among some serious Christmas challengers, and everyone was encouraged to enter again this year.

“It’s great fun and wonderful to see the results of everyone’s hard work and creativity,” Mrs Linklater said.

“Nomination forms will appear in the paper from Wednesday and close on Friday, December 12.”

Mrs Linklater said residents should expect a “dazzling” lift-out in the December 17 edition of the paper, with a full map of all light displays around our streets.

“There are cracking prizes for both residents and businesses, so everyone should jump on board and get into the festive spirit.”

The competition will have a business section and the Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce is urging its members to light up.

“With Christmas not far away, it is time to bring out the decorations and promote our local businesses,” chamber executive Hadyn Oriti said.

Country Energy regional general manager Andrew Latta encouraged businesses to get involved.

“We are proud to support community initiatives such as the Christmas lights competition, which helps promote and showcase our local businesses,” Mr Latta said.

Country Energy has provided electricity vouchers worth $850 for the top three businesses.

Judging for the business section will take place in the week before Christmas and winners will be announced in the Port News.

Residents will vote for the best resident’s Christmas lights display through a coupon that will appear in the Port News in late December.

Voting will continue until the second week of January.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
