LIFESAVERS have rescued two bodyboarders from heavy seas at Tacking Point.
The two 18-year-olds set out yesterday from Lighthouse Beach, despite the fact that the beach had been closed due to dangerous conditions.
The pair was quickly in trouble.
Club captain at Tacking Point Surf Lifesaving Club Mitch Dawson said lifesavers spotted the bodyboarders at around 12:30pm “as they were getting sucked around the point”.
“One bodyboarder got into difficulty when he lost his fins and body board and the other one lost his fins when he went in to help,” Mr Dawson said.
He said the lifesavers followed the pair in a rescue dingy and pulled them from the water.
“They were quite shaken ... and it was probably a fair warning not to do it again.”
Mr Dawson also cautioned adventurous swimmers about heading into water.
“Try and exercise extreme caution, especially with dangerous currents like this,” he said.
“It should be recommended to stay away from the beaches, and that goes for rock fisherman as well.”
He said surf lifesavers had been dedicating a lot of effort to “preventative action” and “public relations”, to stop people entering the water.
