Tonight will mark the start of the sensors’ installation in time-restricted parking spaces along Horton and Hay streets.

The sensors operate through an in-ground unit embedded beneath parking spots.

The technology records how long a car has been parked.

It automatically notifies a ranger via a hand-held device when a car stays long than the allowed time limit – although a grace period is built into the equipment.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council hopes the sensors will lead to a higher turnover of parking spaces.

System installation is expected to take three nights to complete.

Testing of the system will take about three weeks followed by a two-week grace period when warnings will be issued.
