He asked the Australian public to "accept the decision".
Mr Oakeshott, who referred to the historic decision as a "juicy and sexy" one, addressed the nation at Parliament House this afternoon.
He referred to the independents' position - forced at the August 21 poll - as a "wicked dilemma".
The Lyne MP said the decision was "not a mandate" or an "endorsement" for anyone.
"This parliament is going to be different.
"We are all proud and strong independents," he said of the non-aligned MPs.
"... We are committed to electorate and country."
Earlier today Queensland MP Bob Katter threw his support behind Tony Abbott's coalition.
That locked the federal election standing at 74-74.
Later Mr Katter reportedly said he might switch sides in the interests of stability.
"I would put it to you this way: I would most certainly see a moral responsibility to look at the issue of stability," Mr Katter said.
"I would have no difficulty in working with the government whatsoever and also I would feel a moral responsibility to support the government that is in there to provide stability and confidence in Australia."
