Nats line up against CO2 tax

13 Apr, 2011 04:00 AM
CARBON TAX will pinch your pocket, say The Nationals leader, Warren Truss.

In a visit to our town yesterday, he warned residents the carbon tax will push up the price of everyday items.

The government’s proposed carbon tax will especially hit the fuel-reliant transport sector hard, he said. “It increases the cost of living for Australians, it will cost jobs as our industry moves to other parts of the world.”

“But it will do nothing for the environment.”

Mr Truss said a $26 per tonne carbon tax would increase the cost of fuel by 6.5 cents per litre.

“It will all end up on our food bills,” he said.

Opposition indigenous affairs spokesman Nigel Scullion and Senator Fiona Nash also visited Port Macquarie yesterday to express their party’s concern over carbon tax.

Local member of The Nationals Dr David Gillespie attended the meeting to voice his objection to the tax which aims to reduce Australia’s CO2 emmissions.

“Are truck drivers going to stop driving their trucks? No. It’s just revenue generating exercise.

“I support the sentiment of helping the environment but there’s so many better ways for the governent to achieve that,” he said.

Local Climate Change Australia member Harry Cremer, said prices may rise when the tax is introduced but it was in Australia’s best interests.

“There will be short-term price rises because we’re using old technologies but when we transition to new technologies the costs of energy will come down,” said Mr Cremer. “We’ve got to accept short term pain for long term gain,”

“And the Gillard government is providing compensation for the short term pain,” he said.

'CARBON TAX will pinch your pocket'

Sounds like one of the numerous 'levies' or GST the previous Govt introduced.

ps: who the hell is Warren Truss?

Maybe we should call the proposed Carbon Tax the "Notional Party Tax" because neither do anything for the urban regional centres that compose 96% of the population in their electorates.

The about $800 million government charity to coal corporations pursuing the pipe-dream of carbon sequestration merely offsets the royalties paid to state governments.

These funds would be better spent on solar research or installations for households and so reduce our carbon footprint.

Here we go again, the Nationals attempting to gain political leverage at the expense of our children and grandchildren and focusing on peoples greed to gain power!

Nats will line up against anything that is good for the community - unless of course it benefits the party machine. They just lined up all their ammunition against one of the best local state parliamentarians we have ever had and replaced him with a non-entity invisible party hack.

And by the way, who is Warren Truss? Talk about an invisible non-entity party hack. From what comes out of his mouth, he appears to be nothing more than Ray Hadley's lapdog (to use National Party terminology)

6.5c is nothing really. If the aussie dollar falls 20% to 30% which is a very real possibility in the next few years-Petrol will double in price. Thats what we should be worried about.

The CO2 Tax cost increases will not be short term. They will be permanent and increase as the tax increases. Inflation will be back with a vengeance. And what amounts to the largest ever re-engineering of the Australian economy will achieve two parts of virtually nothing when it comes to affecting the earth's temperature.

As if Abbott's "direct action" scheme won't pinch the pocket.

Another Coaltion scare campaign.

Don't these fools realise that the only ones paying this tax will be big polluting industries? The tax is meant to make them clean up their act and develop more environmentally friendly procedures. Us taxpayers will not be paying anything, we'll be compensated for any cost of living increases that might result from the tax.

The Nationals seem to have forgotten that the Howard government had plans for a similar scheme which would have been up and running now if that government had remained in power for another term. It was Nationals policy a few years ago to support that scheme, now they are against it.

Never expect logical thinking and commonsense from the Nationals, they are just professional whingers.
