Lollipop robbers ruin Stephen Matthews’ business

08 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
TWO robberies in six months may force a Port Macquarie shop owner to move premises.

Aussie Takeaway’s Stephen Matthews says he has “had enough” after thieves broke into his store again on Monday night.

Mr Matthews is unsure of his immediate future at the Waniora Shopping Centre.

The situation had become “ridiculous”, he said.

Thieves, who smashed their way into the shop, escaped with just lollies and snacks.

It is believed a sledgehammer was used to enter the shop.

A trail of lollipops and other sweets were dropped along the perpetrators’ escape route at the rear of the small shopping centre.

Mr Matthews said the second attack had left him emotionally drained.

About $700 damage was inflicted on the store, for stock worth just $50.

“What they have done is just ridiculous, it really gets to you,” Mr Matthews said. “You start coming to work each morning wondering if the store’s been broken into again.

“Everyone around here wants us to stay, but you’ve got to ask yourself if it’s really worth it.”

Mr Matthews’ insurance premiums would rise because of the claim, he said.

But the biggest effect would be a day’s loss of trade.

“We had to close for the day so we can clean up and get the repairs done,” he said. “It’s a big loss to us. We don’t have that much of a profit margin, so when things like this happens, it really puts us behind.”

Mr Matthews said he was seriously considering moving his shop because of the attacks.

He said he could either relocate or turn his shopfront into “Fort Knox”, a suggestion he was not ready to consider.

“This is my only source of income,” he said. “I can’t just sit around and let this keep happening. We may have to move to another location.

“Others have said we should look at putting roller doors up, but it’s a big shame if things are getting to that stage. Besides, it’s very costly and would make the place look like Fort Knox.”

To have no crime you would need a cop on every corner of every street. How many corners in Port Macquarie? What we do need is tougher penalties for the ones who are caught. Get rid of the bleeding heart pollies, judges and others who feel sorry for the crooks.

Agree with Lone Ranger 100%

Keep your spirits high Stephen, we are not all like the thugs that robbed you.

Nothing wrong with having roller doors set up at night, who cares what the place looks like when 90% of the population are asleep!

We knew it would come to this when the former State Government allowed the Housing Commission to buy the units directly behind Waniora shops.

@jack. Mate, I think you need to think before you type. The Lib/Nats are in Govt in NSW and it is the State that has the responsiblity for Law and Order. The Libs want to put less people in Goal remember. Police numbers have no effect on crime rates, shown by many studies over many many years. Putting people in Gaol has no effect on crime rates. Over 20 years as a police officer taught me that this type of crime is a social problem, famlies, communities and government must work together to prevent this in the long term.

I would suggest investing money in an alarm system and roller doors/security windows.

All of the money you would spend in installing these precautions would stop all the money you spend on repairing the damage/insurance premiums etc.

Good luck Stephen and keep your head high! 99% of Port Macquarie residents are great people!
