Lake Cathie to soon have incoming calls

Lake Cathie to soon have incoming calls

12 Dec, 2011 03:00 AM
AN answer is on the way for poor mobile phone reception at Lake Cathie.

Optus wants to build a 30m-high telecommunications tower in the village to improve mobile phone reception.

The proposal went before Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s Development Assessment Panel last week.

The panel recommended the project be granted conditional consent when it came before a full council meeting for a decision.

PC Pitstop owner Ben Waters deals with the problem every day.

“My staff and I deal with thousands of customers a year distressed with the state of connectivity in the area,” Mr Waters said.

He has seen long-term customers repeatedly return in search of answers to improve mobile and wireless reception and new customers were flabbergasted at the lack of reception.

“I have seen many people who make their living working from home tearing their hair out over how tedious business and communications becomes when even standard quality reception is just not available,” Mr Waters said.

PC Pitstop has tried various solutions, such as antennas and faster modems, for customers and the business.

“The erection of this tower will be an asset to this growing community,” Mr Waters said.

The tower is earmarked to be built at Lake Cathie Shopping Centre on land between an existing building and a large vegetated block.

Mr Waters said better connectivity would result in happier and safer residents, happier holidaymakers, better business and, most importantly, Lake Cathie would feel like a modern community with a voice.

Lake Cathie Progress Association also supports the Optus tower proposal.

More than 70 per cent of respondents to a progress association survey last year recorded a zero to poor signal.

Lake Cathie Progress Association secretary Jack Jones said most residents needed to go out on the street to make or take mobile calls.

Mr Jones said it was almost impossible to operate a small business from home and a number of householders were still using dial-up internet and desperately wanted a wireless connection.

The Liberals sold-off Telecom/Telstra, and what incentive is there for Optus (Singaporean Government subsidiary) do held residents of Lake Cathie?

Where will the tower be situated? Not too close to homes hopefully.

Jeepers. Don't tell me someone has finally decided to do something for the residents of Lake Cathie. Wow!

Now can we please get some more help down this way with better beach access, grass mown along walkways and better road surfaces?

Excellent news I'll be changing to Optus as the service provided by Telstra is appalling for those of us near Lake Innes as the NIMBY's stopped the new Telstra tower at Mill Hill. We'll be back in the 21st century, now just bring on the NBN co.

This is marvellous news, and the sooner the better. I changed to Telstra 3G with a new blue tick phone as the best option, but it is still pretty bad. It is also way more expensive than Optus and their resellers.

Roll on the new tower, and if anybody complains, they can put it in my backyard!

I have a Telstra mobile phone and I've never had any reception problems in the Lake Cathie area......Are we talking Lake Cathie to have incoming calls, or incoming calls from Optus because from my experience the residents of Lake Cathie have always had incoming calls, just perhaps not with their preferred provider. That being the case take the complaints to Optus and stop creating headlines like the problems are with ALL providers.

Never had reception or call outgoing problems at lkake cathie on Optus, Telstra. the biggest service provider with problems everywhere is Vodaphone.

I think if you take a good look at those protesting at mobile phone coverage, they are using older or cheaper handsets that are only 2G. The cheaper the phone you buy, the poorer the performance no matter who's service you are with.

3G telstra and Optus are no problems and never have been at lake cathie, 2G yes, and that is more alimitation of the handset.

Telstra 'blue tick' is a joke, I have 2 less than 12 months old 'blue tick' Telstra mobiles and they do not work reliably where I live at Brierley Hills (northern edge of Lake Innes)due to the signal coverage shadow cast by Mill Hill.

I also have 2 x Optus phones in my household that also have very poor signal coverage.

Bring on any type of repeater that will give me the coverage you all obviously take for granted.

@ John

Have you thought about the Optus Home Zone repeater which allows your Optus mobiles to connect via your own internet connection? http://www.optus.com.au/home/home-zone/
