 Ironman can kick in $50m

Ironman can kick in $50m

17 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
UP to $50 million could be pumped in to the region’s economy after it was announced Ironman Australia would stay in Port Macquarie for up to five years.

The announcement will have long-term benefits for ratepayers in the Hastings.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council general manager Andrew Roach said the commitment by council to the event would benefit residents year-round.

Mr Roach said council would focus on a better infrastructure, based on roads, parks, footpaths and cycleways thanks to the new deal.

The agreement to host the event in the Hastings is expected to inject about $10 million a year into the region’s economy for the next three years.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council representatives secured the event with a two-year performance-based extension.

The World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), who owns Ironman Australia, intend to make the Port Macquarie festival the “best in the world”.

WTC brand manager Australia Trent Taylor said the company wanted to provide the best location for Ironman Australia.

Council’s willingness to secure the event and the infrastructure available to competitors meant Port Macquarie was the best option.

Mr Taylor said council director of corporate and business services Tony Leahy and his team were key to securing the event for the town.

He also praised the army of volunteers associated with running previous races in Port Macquarie, saying they played a major role in the success of the negotiations.

Port Macquarie’s volunteers were unmatched anywhere in the world, he said.

And it will be the volunteers’ continued involvement in the event, strong competitor numbers and the ongoing involvement of the community that could secure the possible two- year extension.

In an Australian first, next year’s Ironman Australia also will have a new look.

The half-Ironman will be held on the same day and on the same course.

A completely redesigned finish line will be on the Town Green in 2011.

Other changes in the pipeline, include the race expo, registration and merchandising areas to be moved to the Glasshouse.

The date for the 2011 race double-header will be announced after the 25th running of Ironman Australia, which will be held in Port Macquarie on March 28.

Well, with that $50m they can fix the roads, mow some parks, how abut mowing the side of Pacific Drive off Ocean drive, not all at once, but it would be nice!

Praise is due to the previous GM at council for this and the foresight of the council. Oh well, you have an administrator now who is rarely seen. How you all forget.

Now that the long term future of the ironman is going to be in Port how about we use some of those funds to build a designated cycle track. It would make it safer and also prevent the ineviatble headlines of "cyclist gets killed on hastings river drive"if nothing gets done. How about some of the triathletes look at raising money for this cause?

@robert Yes, the same GM who wasted ratepayers' funds through travelling at council's expense to Hawaii so as to "represent council" at the World Triathlon Championship, which was not reported in local media (reference minutes of council meeting 30 May 2005). The multi-million dollar revenue predictions made by councils are always a joke. A former Mayor is on the record stating that the Glasshouse would bring in $50M revenue annually without any supporting evidence.

It may inject money a huge amount of money into our town but what about the impact it has on our hospital. 2 years ago when it was on my Mother suffered a heart attack. The ambulance was held up for 25 min getting to her due to call outs to people falling of bikes getting heat stroke etc etc. The ambulance was then again held up dropping her off at the hospital due to the copious amount of amublances dropping off Athletes to the hospital. Our A&E is always loaded as it is and I dont know why the iroman isnt able to set-up/orgainse a st Johns tent or something of the likes in the village to deal with some of these cases. Our hospital is not able to cope with the added pressure without putting others at risk.

So they estimate $50mil over 5 years will flow to local businesses but at what direct cost to ratepayers over 5 years. I recall similar claims about the touch football. As for concentrating on infrastructure I would have thought infrastructure planning should be broader than simply what upgrages suit the triathalon

It's good that we still have the Ironman event. Overall it is good for the town. However if you actually read the articles in yesterdays Port News and not just the headlines, there are some interesting points to note: - we currenlty have only been guaranteed three more yrs not 5 - they are planning to move alot of the different marshalling etc to THE GLASSHOUSE, meaning 1800 or more people will have to further congest our CBD just to register!! - Also where now we have 2 Triathlon events, the full and half ironman (the half event currently runs in November), the Port News is saying there is a "NEW" event which will be run simltaneously to the big event. This event is NOT new it is basically being swallowed up into the full ironman event, meaning we will now have only 1 event not 2, meaning the injection of funds in November (for accomm, etc)from the half ironman will now disappear altogether. Dont be fooled by the headlines. we are going to be worse off with this new plan

I'm very disappointed that Port Macquarie has LOST the half ironman in November as a stand alone event.
