A TIDE of support has followed a call for a new ramp to replace the existing “dangerous’’ incline at a popular surfing beach.
The not-for-profit, Disabled Surfers Association Port Macquarie branch wants a new ramp built at Flynns Beach.
Improved toilets and showers also are needed, the group says.
Association secretary Mellissa Roughly said talks with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to have the ramp built were “going really well’’.
Mrs Roughly’s husband Jeff said the beach was ideal for its 100-plus members.
But “the existing ramp is just far too unsafe’’.
“Every time I see an elderly person grab the rail and walk down, I cringe,’’ Mr Roughly said.
“The incline makes it way too dangerous. It should be permanently roped off.
“Everything else around here makes it the perfect spot for us to use.
“There is grassy, shady areas and the beach itself is perfect.
“There’s not many rocks, and we usually get our own little spot in the surf.”
Mrs Roughly said Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club had been “fantastic” and always supported the group, founded nearly a decade ago, at Flynns.
Port Macquarie MP Peter Besseling backed the association’s bid for a new ramp.
“It [the ramp] is certainly something that will benefit, not just the association or the surf life saving club, but the general community,’’ Mr Besseling said.
