Dicks takes the torch on harmonious run

04 May, 2008 11:00 PM
A SLICE of harmony came to the Hastings on Friday.

A team of international runners in the World Harmony Run stopped at Port Macquarie to spread the harmony message.

The team members are carrying a blazing torch of peace for more than 15,000km over 111 days.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council administrator Dick Persson welcomed the group of runners with an international flavour before they visited Port Macquarie Public School in Owen St.

One of the runners, Prabhakar Street, was pleased with the run so far.

"We are getting a tremendous response, particularly from the schools," Mr Street said.

"The kids light up seeing the torch and that sort of smile, happiness and laughter feeds us and gives us a tremendous amount of satisfaction."

Mr Street, a 41-year-old Canadian carpenter, has joined the entire Australian run.

The global torch relay, an initiative of spiritual leader and athlete Sri Chinmoy in 1987, unites thousands of communities and millions of people in more than 100 countries.

This year marks the first time the relay has run a continuous route around Australia.

"We want to bring joy and bring the idea that harmony begins with each one of us," Mr Street said.
