Black armbands herald pokie tax arrival

01 Aug, 2004 06:01 PM
BLACK armbands will mark the start of the increased poker machine tax in the Hastings on September 1.

Registered clubs claim the tax will cripple them and reduce their ability to offer financial support to the community.

The Hastings Axe the Tax Committee met on Thursday to determine what strategies they would use to oppose the increased tax.

Committee chairman and Port Macquarie City Bowling Club chief executive Rod Wilson said he hoped the wearing of bands would highlight the issue to the community.

He said there were plans to approach lawn bowlers and club staff to support the move.

"We thought it would be a great way to draw attention from the community," he said.

But they're also committed to sending as many local club members as possible to Sydney on September 1 to participate in the ClubsNSW rally.

The rally will protest Treasurer Michael Egan's announcement that clubs will be forced to pay an additional $1.8 billion in tax over the next seven years.

ClubsNSW is expecting an even bigger turnout than last year's rally, when more than 15,000 people marched.

"We're hoping to get at least one, if not two busloads of people to the march," Mr Wilson said.

He said the only hurdle facing the committee was getting enough people to support the move.

"I think our biggest problem is getting members on side and getting them enthusiastic about it.

"The first thing they can do is get behind the rally and put their name down to go on a bus."

He said signing the mass letter, available from local clubs, would also help.

"We're aiming to get at least 500 signed letters from each club in the area," he said.

"I still think that ClubsNSW has a glimmer of hope that common sense will prevail."

MPs will be sitting at Parliament House when the club industry rallies on September 1.
