ONE of our newest playgrounds has received mixed reviews.
Some who have used the equipment at the Town Beach facility believe it is “exciting’’.
But others fear the state-of-the-art fun could be dangerous.
Danish visitor Susan Brorson said it was “really exciting to see something so different”.
Her 10-year-old twins, Marissa and Isabella, had a ball.
The girls said they loved the location and the way the playground encouraged strength and agility.
But not everyone is impressed.
Pauline Barry, 38, witnessed an upsetting accident.
“A boy about 11 years old fell off the rotating swing and lay there for quite a while before a lady went over to see if he was okay,” Mrs Barry said.
“When he got up, his mouth was really bloody and it looked like he had hurt his teeth.”
Teenagers Nelson Prussing, Bill Roberts, Georgia Dunn and Christina Boswell said they had seen “so many kids fall off” the equipment.
The group said the playground could easily be misused. They said this was bad because young children watch and copy the older ones.
Mother-of-two, Melanie Robinson said she was disappointed.
“There is not a lot here for younger children, and it is the at-home mums who need places to go during the day,” the 34-year-old said.
Mrs Robinson also felt concern about behaviour of older children using the equipment.
“Some of them are a bit rough and just bowl over the younger ones.
“On the upside though it is a great safe location and I am really happy we have it here.”
Another concern voiced by parents was the lack of toilet facilities – the closest are at Town Beach kiosk.
Port Macquarie Hastings Council parks and recreation manager Liam Bulley said council had “tried to install equipment that suits both young and older children”.
Swings and a slippery dip would be installed in the coming weeks.
