A see-saw verdict on new playground

28 Jul, 2010 04:00 AM
ONE of our newest playgrounds has received mixed reviews.

Some who have used the equipment at the Town Beach facility believe it is “exciting’’.

But others fear the state-of-the-art fun could be dangerous.

Danish visitor Susan Brorson said it was “really exciting to see something so different”.

Her 10-year-old twins, Marissa and Isabella, had a ball.

The girls said they loved the location and the way the playground encouraged strength and agility.

But not everyone is impressed.

Pauline Barry, 38, witnessed an upsetting accident.

“A boy about 11 years old fell off the rotating swing and lay there for quite a while before a lady went over to see if he was okay,” Mrs Barry said.

“When he got up, his mouth was really bloody and it looked like he had hurt his teeth.”

Teenagers Nelson Prussing, Bill Roberts, Georgia Dunn and Christina Boswell said they had seen “so many kids fall off” the equipment.

The group said the playground could easily be misused. They said this was bad because young children watch and copy the older ones.

Mother-of-two, Melanie Robinson said she was disappointed.

“There is not a lot here for younger children, and it is the at-home mums who need places to go during the day,” the 34-year-old said.

Mrs Robinson also felt concern about behaviour of older children using the equipment.

“Some of them are a bit rough and just bowl over the younger ones.

“On the upside though it is a great safe location and I am really happy we have it here.”

Another concern voiced by parents was the lack of toilet facilities – the closest are at Town Beach kiosk.

Port Macquarie Hastings Council parks and recreation manager Liam Bulley said council had “tried to install equipment that suits both young and older children”.

Swings and a slippery dip would be installed in the coming weeks.

As a vocal critic of PMH Council for doing nothing over the years, we can hardly attack Council for finally doing something. The play equipment at Town Beach has brought life back to an area left dead for 10 years. Since it was installed hundreds of parents and their children have enjoyed the play equipment each weekend. Injuries will always occur when young children use this equipment, that is a fact of life with any play equipment.

and weren't trees the original play equipment before we started to sterilise and homogenise children's play experiences? They're a darn sight more dangerous than the new Town Beach swing, and Lord knows I fell out of a few trees in my day - all a healthy part of learning, growing up and developing your motor skills. Congrats to Council for providing an experience that provides stimulation and learning opportunities for all.

I think the council has done a really great job for the older kids who were seriously suffering as a result of the rubbish that was there before... Until they install age appropriate equipment for the younger kids though ill keep taking my 3 & 1 year old to the observatory park

There has certainly been a lot of interest in the playground - many children enjoying the facilities. So what if there are a few tumbles!! Today's children are cossetted far too much. I was not wrapped in cotton wool and neither were my children.

i wish they had something for kids up to the age of say 6, my kids love the park but cant play on any of it but big thumbs up for this park and the thinking behind it, maybe install some more rubbish bins so we can keep it clear.

What the people in this article are talking about is the way children play with at times little regard for other children or themselves & that is not the fault of the equipment. Most children will be fine as they do not play rough & have good adult supervision from there parents but as is the case in our society a few will be at the other end of the scale & will hurt themselves or other children in the process. Good on the council for this lovely equipment.

I applaud the council for constructing such a fun park for children of different ages. I took my children there recently but I was there for not even a few minutes as I was trying to push my 4mnth old over in the pram and my 4yr old son had walked into the path of the rotating swing as it was on its way back down. It sent him flying in the air hiting the ground face down as an older (and much heavier child) was on it. Fortunately my son was not badly injured only shaken with a bump near his eye and doesnt want to return to the park. The child on the swing had a bruise where hed ran into my son. His father was apologetic and concerned about the safety issue also. Maybe council should put a small fence surrounding the swing so other children do not walk into the oncoming path of it as it wil cause a major accident having a heavy child on it runing into a smaller younger child. We probably wont return there any time soon.
